NDIS Provider Registration Guide How to Get Registered Without Letting It Hold You Back from Starting Your Business

July 29, 20255 min read

So you’re thinking about becoming an NDIS provider?

That’s a massive step. And if your heart’s in the right place, wanting to support people in your community and build something meaningful then I want to make sure you don’t get stuck before you even begin.

Because here’s what most people don’t realise:

You don’t need to be registered to get started.

Let’s break it down, step by step so you can move forward with clarity, confidence and a smart strategy.

Step 1: Do You Actually Need to Register Right Now?

Only 20% of NDIS participants are NDIA managed. These are the clients you need to be registered to support.

But the other 80%? They’re either plan managed or self managed and you can support them right now, without being a registered provider, as long as you’re delivering services that don’t require registration.

That’s huge.

So while registration is an important part of long term growth and is essential if you want to offer clinical or high risk supports, it shouldn’t hold you back from starting.

In fact, the registration process can take 12 to 18 months. That’s a long wait when you’ve got skills to offer and people ready to work with you today.

And if NDIA managed clients approach you before you're registered? I’ve got a solution for that too.

We can connect you with a brokerage arrangement, a registered provider who’ll subcontract you under their registration. They only take 10% of the hourly rate, and only for those clients. So you can still work, earn, and build your business while your registration is processing.

🚫 A Quick Word of Warning: Don’t Buy a Registered Business Without Reading This

I see it all the time.

People offering to sell “ready made” NDIS registered businesses for $20,000 or more. But here’s what they’re not telling you:

  • You’re only gaining access to 20% of the market

  • You still need to go through an immediate audit due to change of director

  • You’ll be paying for that audit yourself

  • You still have to build, run and grow the business from scratch

That’s a lot of money for a shortcut that doesn’t really get you ahead.

Instead, do it properly with real support. Learn how to grow a business that reflects your values, meets compliance, and sets you up for long term success.

✅ Services You Can Offer Without Being Registered

If you’re working with plan managed or self managed participants, here are services you can deliver right now without registration:

  • Domestic cleaning

  • Gardening and home maintenance

  • Transport and travel assistance

  • Community participation and social support

  • Life skills training

  • Meal prep and food-related assistance

  • Therapy assistant work (under supervision)

  • Personal care (basic support, no high-intensity tasks)

You still need to meet NDIS expectations, that means having the right insurance, worker screening, and service agreements in place.

🛑 Services That Require NDIS Registration

To offer these services to any participant, regardless of their funding, you must be a registered provider:

  • Support coordination

  • Supported Independent Living (SIL)

  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)

  • Plan management

  • High-intensity daily supports (PEG feeding, insulin, seizure monitoring)

  • Nursing care

  • Behaviour support and restrictive practices

These services come with clinical risks and strict compliance requirements, which is why registration is essential.

Step 2: The NDIS Registration Process (Simplified)

Here’s what the process looks like:

  1. Create an account on the NDIS Commission Portal

  2. Complete your online application in the MyPlace Provider Portal

  3. Upload your business info, service list, and supporting docs

  4. Complete the self-assessment against Practice Standards

  5. Submit your application

  6. Get your required registration group and audit type

  7. Book your approved auditor

  8. Complete the audit (includes document review and interviews)

  9. Submit your audit results

  10. If successful, receive your provider number and get listed on the NDIS portal

What It Costs

  • Fully customised documents and consulting: $2000 to $7000

  • Verification audits (low-risk services): $900 to $3000
