Vanessa Norman explains why NDIS providers need to stop hiding behind compliance and focus on visibility, relationships and service to grow their business.

Stop Hiding Behind Compliance | It Will Not Grow Your NDIS Business

September 17, 20254 min read

Let’s be honest.
In the NDIS space, compliance has become the ultimate security blanket.

Policies? Check.
Audit passed? Check.
NDIS Commission happy? Check.

That is all important. But here is the truth nobody talks about.
Compliance alone will not grow your business.

Compliance is the Baseline, Not the Goal

I meet providers every week who have been told:

“Just get your registration and compliance sorted, then the clients will come.”

It is a comforting idea. But it is also wrong.

Compliance is the minimum requirement to operate.
It keeps you legal. It ensures safety. It protects participants.
But it does not put your name in front of the right people.
It does not build relationships.
And it does not create the trust that leads to referrals.

The Danger of “I Am Just Getting My Compliance Sorted”

I see it all the time. Good providers who have been “getting ready” for years.

No website. No networking. No visibility. No relationships with referral partners.
Just waiting until everything is perfect on paper before putting themselves out there.

Here is the problem.
While you are stuck in that mode, other providers are building connections, showing up in the community, and becoming the go to names in your area.

By the time you step out of your compliance bubble, the people who could have been referring to you are already loyal to someone else.

Where Compliance Fits Into Growth

Let’s be clear. I am not saying compliance does not matter.
It is essential. You cannot run an ethical, sustainable business without it.
But once your compliance foundations are set, you need to move.

Think of it like building a house:
Compliance is the slab and the frame.
It holds everything up. But nobody moves in until you have built the walls, added the roof, and made it liveable.

In business, those walls and roof are:

  • Relationships with referral partners

  • Clear communication about your services

  • A visible, trustworthy brand

  • Consistently delivering high-quality support

What Actually Grows an NDIS Business

If you want to grow your NDIS business, you need to focus on three key areas.

1. Visibility

People cannot refer to you if they do not know you exist.
That means being seen in the right places networking events, community groups, professional meetups.
It also means having a presence online so potential referrers and participants can find you easily.

2. Relationships

Referrals in the NDIS do not come from cold emails and business cards alone.
They come from trust. And trust is built over time through genuine connection.
Think less “sales pitch” and more “coffee with a purpose.”

3. Service Excellence

Do what you say you will do.
Show up on time. Communicate clearly. Follow through when things go wrong.
This is what makes people confident to send clients your way.

Signs You Are Stuck in Compliance Mode

  • You tell people you are just waiting to finish your registration before promoting your business.

  • You are avoiding networking because you do not feel ready.

  • You have been in business for months or years but still rely on one or two inconsistent referral sources.

  • Your policies are immaculate, but your calendar is empty.

If that sounds like you, it is time to break the cycle.

How to Move Beyond Compliance

Here is what I recommend.

1. Get your compliance sorted, then stop tinkering.

Once your policies, insurances and systems meet NDIS standards, resist the urge to perfect them forever.

2. Build a connection plan.

Identify the people and organisations who already work with your ideal clients.
Support coordinators are one option, but also think about OTs, physios, psychologists, GPs, plan managers and community groups.

3. Show up before you think you are ready.

You do not need every brochure printed or every template perfected before introducing yourself.

4. Follow up consistently.

Do not just meet someone once and hope for the best. Keep the relationship alive.

5. Keep delivering great service.

Nothing beats consistent, high quality support for creating a reputation that grows your business.

The Balance Between Compliance and Growth

Think of your business like a seesaw.
On one side is compliance, your foundation. On the other side is growth, your visibility, relationships and service excellence.

If you focus only on compliance, you tip too far and never move forward.
If you focus only on growth without compliance, you risk collapse.

The sweet spot?
Strong compliance that supports, not slows, your growth activities.

Compliance will keep you in business.
But relationships, visibility and service will keep you growing.

If you have been hiding behind “I am just getting my compliance sorted,” it is time to step out.
Meet people. Build trust. Be seen.
Because the providers who combine strong compliance with active, strategic growth?
They are the ones who thrive.
